Living organisms are made up of cells, which are considered the smallest living unit. Robert Hooke, an English scientist, coined the word cell in 1665. He looked at a slice of cork under a microscope and noticed tiny boxlike structures that resembled rows of monks’ cells in a monastery, or cells in a piece of honeycomb. What he actually saw were the walls of dead cells.
